This is a portrait of a group of horse-riders in central Morocco as they take part in Tbourida, an equestrian even that dates back centuries.
This film was one of my must sees at NYFF. I love good films about horses and horse related things. My reaction to the film is kind of what I expected, with my loving a lot of it and being kind of okay with the rest.
What I loved about the film was the images and the details of the horse culture. I loved disappearing into a place far from New York to a part of the world I know nothing about. I adored how the camera made the animals glorious and sang the praises of the men who rode them.
At the same time the film’s low-key nature in giving us a you- are-there mixed with artful images telling made the film less a living breathing film and more an art house exercise. The pace of things is a bit too leisurely and I had the feeling that the film would have been better trimmed of 20 minutes.
My reservation aside this film is killer on a big screen and you will want to see it in a theater where the images will pull you out of your seat.
Recommended.
