A pointer toward STAY ON LINE (2023) Fantasia 2023

I'm not going to review  STAY ON LINE. It is not because I don't think it's a good film, I do think it's a good film (actually it its a great film that will kick you in the heart), however because of how the story is told I don't think it's fair for me to review the film.

Set during the early days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine the film is the story of a woman trying to use a found laptop to find it's owner, one of her friends. The whole film is told from the POV of what the woman sees on the computer screen as she attempts to locate the man.

Forgive me I'm an old fart, and I really don't like films like this. I have never liked watching people surf the web or do things on a computer screen (short of tutorial) and as such I tend not to like films where it's primarily people opening and closing windows on a desk top. Because I don't like the form I'm not comfortable truly reviewing it.

My reservations aside I do have to say that as these sort of films go this is one of the best. The urgency of current events add a great deal to the level of suspense. Because it is Ukraine the stakes are much more real then a missing kid or a serial killer playing a game with his victims.  Frankly I was invested enough that I  stayed watching to see what happens as sadness over took me.
