Odds are you haven't heard of Kwame Braithwaite even if you have seen some of his photos. Kwame, along with his brother, sought to show the positive side of being African American. Instead of pain he showed joy. He showed everyday life. He made people see that black is beautiful through every means possible. It's a story that you need to see and hear.
When I walked into BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, I didn't know what I was going to see. All I knew was that it was biography. Ten minutes into the film I has absolutely gob smacked that Braithwaite had done so much without his name ever registering on my radar. I was also in absolute awe of the images he took, and the things he did beyond that. That such amazing photos, and such seismic changes to society have ended up, until now, kind of hidden away is a shame.
We are lucky to have this film since it will help put Braitwaite and his work back into the public eye.
This is a great film. It's not only one the great films playing DOC NYC but of 2025 as well.
A must see, especially if you can see it on a big screen where the images will move you to tears.
