I missed PERFECT DAYS when it played the New York Film Festival last year. I gave my ticket to Nate Hood and told him to email me when he got out of the film. His response was that it was Wim Wenders best film in four decades. He may very well be right.
Finally after fumbling it's November Oscar qualifying run, I finally sat down and saw the film with the film opening this week.
The film is simply the life of a man who cleans public toilets in Tokyo. We simply watch him as he goes through his motions, interacts with co-workers and the people he meets along the way. He photographs the trees he sees. He has a drink. Nothing much happens and everything does.
I love this film a great deal. It's a film where the whole of humanity is revealed in simply observing life. There is joy and sadness and a sense of life being lived. It had odd random moments that made me weep withe the sheer emotion exposed in that moment.
I smiled from start to finish.
I completely understand why Nate put it in the top five films of 2023. Since I didn't see it in 2023, it will be going on my list of 2024 films.
See this film and feel alive.
