THE COMPLEX FORMS (2024) Slamdance 2024

You want to see this film. If I was given access when I was doing my curtain raiser for Slamdance it would have been on the recommended list.

The plot has some people taken to a mansion for a job. People can revive their fortune by selling their bodies to strange entities… and I really can’t say any more. I say that because this is a puzzle box of a film that unfolds in unexpected ways. You need to take the journey to see where it goes. And then you’ll want to see it again to see how it got you there.

Blessed with stunning visuals, THE COMPLEX FORMS grabs you from the first frame and  drags you all the way to the end. It’s a visually glorious film you will want to see as big as possible because you will want the images to swallow you whole.

To be certain the plot is a atypical, but this is a journey and it takes the course of the film to sort it out.  This is not a film where you are going to guess the end at the beginning.  This is a film that is its own animal. It moves in its own way. To be certain bits and pieces might seem like something familiar at first but give it a moment and director Fabio D'Orta is going to derail that idea and take things in a new and unexpected way.

Yes I am being intentionally obtuse. I’m not going to give the game away. I say that because as I got to the end of the film I suddenly became aware of all of the reviews that were going to say too much. Critiquing a film is not revealing all, to me it’s expressing what works and what doesn’t but leaving some mystery for the audience.

See this film.

If you love off the beaten path films even more so. (And if you are reading  Unseen Films you’re the perfect audience)
