Larry Fessenden's latest, and possibly final film is a sequel of sorts to his earlier films HABIT (about a vampire, BLACKOUT (about a werewolf) and DEPRAVED (a reinvention of Frankenstein) which also stands on it's own.
The film has a young woman living in an upstate New York town writing who is writing about George Washington Carber deciding to write about the monsters that may or may not live in her town. it's an article that complicates things and causes trouble to appear.
As with all Larry Fessenden's film the straight forward explanation of the plot is really not what the film is about. While tense, his films are rarely scary, not because there are no monsters, rather because Fessenden is using the monsters to simply tell the story about people ....who just might be a monster. As a result of this misdirection he has made some of the most haunting films about the human condition that you can find in all of cinema. I am serious about that and I would gladly argue that DEPRAVED is a better Frankenstein film than Guillermo del Toro's because there is no gee whiz look at that moments, simply moments that break your heart.
Fessenden is not really making a sequel here, instead he is telling the story of a young woman in a small town in upstate New York. Yes, there are monsters there, but at the same time they aren't the focus of the film, they are just there because he needs them their to get eyes on the story he wants to tell. And the story Feddenden wants to tell is a story of one part of humanity.
I was moved.
