WE BELIEVE YOU (2025) Berlin 2025

Alice is a mother who has to bring her children to court in order to explain why she should be allowed to maintain custory during a bitter divorce proceeding.

Myriem Akheddiou slots herself into the early Oscar race in a towering performance as a mother dealing with the emotional trauma of her life. Her kids are distant and at times rebelious, her husband is trouble and the court is officious. Its a troubling mix and we right there, You will be in her face during the time before during and after the proceeding.

Shot in a style that mirrors Dreyers PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, we are always up close and personal and we simply can't look away. At the same time Akheddiou can't fake it and she doesn't and as a result we bleed for her.

As a film as a whole I liked it, but I don't love it. The reason is a kind of small one and that is we are only given a window into a small period of time with the characters and I wanted to see more. I have  so many questions. Don't let my quibble fool you this is a killer film and Myriem Akheddiou takes names and kicks ass.  You will want to see this before it becomes a critical darling and you will feel as though you're missing out on one of the best performances of 2025.
