Minotaur (2026) NYFF 2026

France's Oscar entry is a scam. Its not that its a film in Russian being put up by a French speaking country, rather it's an incredibly familiar infidelity tale dressed up with Russian war references and more than a passing reference to the corruption in that country.

The plot of the film has a married man with his business compromised by the Russian attack on an unnamed country. He finds out his wife is having an affair.... and things happen.

You've seen this before, any number of times. There is nothing remarkable about the infidelity tale other than its artily done. Its so uncomplicated and by the book odds are you'll want to watch one of the infinite direct to video tales just so things are ever so slightly more interesting.

What got the film noticed by the programmers was its references to the Russian war. People fleeing to other countries is making our hero's business difficult, as is the fact he has to pick 14 people to be drafted. None of it really has anything to do with the main thrust of the story. Its just there as window dressing and to make the film seem infinitely more clever than it is. Its a fil for people who haven't watched a film like this since Jacques Rivette died.

To be completely fair, the film isn't bad. Yes its about 30 minutes too long, but it isn't bad, it's just something we are 47 steaps ahead of.  We are so far ahead of the film that a certain well done sequence that takes up a chunk of the last third of the film kind of lays there because we know how its going to go and generates zero suspense.

Worth a shot if you don't mind well worn tales, but you'll still wonder why its winning awards.
