You will forgive me, but this is is not going to be what I intended. Originally I was going to watch both versions of THE SERPENTS PATH films (The original was shot in 1998 as a direct to video film and a remake was done in France for a much larger budget in 2024) but things happened. Mostly what happened was that after watching the two films merged together as a single film and I really couldn't write about them as seperate entities.
The basic plot of both films has a man, assisted by a doctor, looking to get revenge for the people responsible for the death of his daughter. The 1998 version was a more feral/gritty version with a male doctor. The 2024 version is more polished with a female doctor. The newer version is aiming to be something beyond a thriller.
Both versions of the film are really good. Both films are worth seeing, especially if you are a fan of Kiyoshi Kurosawa.
Thankfully the Japan Society is not running them back to back. The new version is running Thursday July 17. The original runs on July 19.
