HOPPERS (2026) was the NYICFF 2026 Opening Night film

A young woman who wants to save the glade she visited with her grandmother hijacks her college professor's "hopper" robot that allows her to be inside a life like animal robot and interact with the animals.

The latest from Disney/Pixar is good little film that works best in it's second half.

Watching the film at the NYICFF sneak preview I was disappointed for the first half. Friends had raved about the film and I went in with high hopes. However an UP opening riff  with our heroine and her grandmother got my panties in a bunch early on. It didn't help that the film didn't really do anything new for a chunck of the first half. Honestly I was ready to walk and catch the film on streaming.

Then the film turned dark and started to go in unexpected places and my desire to leave went away. I was enjoying the fact that we finally had a Disney Pixar film that was breaking their own rules. I mean some of the turns had the audience of kids and parents gasping because "Disney doesn't do that."

I had a grand time in that second half. I had such a good time that I wish they had done that in the first half as well.

No, I will not ruin what happens, not even to explain why I am incredulous that scientists are complaining about some of what happens in the film. Guys-its a freaking cartoon about talking animals- its not real. I want you to find the same joy I found in that second half. (Also I don't want to deconstruct the film before it comes out-maybe later)

Yes, the film is worth your time and money- I say that because the misty feeling you'll get at the end is genuinely earned- and because well...it's not an entirely happy ending.

HOPPERS hits theaters Friday so give it a shot.
