Shahnaz Mahmud's THE BLOSSOM is the story of Maya, a young woman grieving the loss of her mother. Her feelings are complicated because she has always felt her mother wanted to get away from her.
This is solid film that scores big points with something that most dramas about parents and children never does, and that is to reveal that what the child believes to be the truth isn't what the whole truth was. There are layers of things and lives that our parents lead that we are not fully aware of. Shahna'z script touches on it and it is something that makes the film resonate deeply with the viewer.
To be up front I know Shahnaz from traveling with in the same cinema circles in the NYC area. I mention this not because it affected my feelings for the film in anyway except one. Before I saw the film I had discussion with her concerning the difficulty in budgeting the film. She had mentioned that she had make a few alterations to her plans because of it. In watching the film I was aware of the issue because I realized that there were several sequences that would have played even better if they had been part of feature film. Frankly there is so much here that I like concerning the story and what is done with it, thgat I am certain that if this could be expanded and we could get more back story and more shading to the various characters.
This is a film to keep an eye out for.
