COLLECTIVE MONOLOGUE
Verite look at the interaction of humans and animals in zoos and rescue centers across Argentina. I am not going to lie, this is a slow slog that meanders all over the place for the better part of two hours. While not bad, it isn't all that compelling, even compared to some of the not particularly compelling nature docs from the last year. And as for the title- why wait until the end to explain what it means? The "Oh yes" moment at the end comes to late.
A young girl spends a summer with her family and her grandmother at beach house in the wake of the death of the young girl's mother.
Until I saw my friend Eden's Letterbox review I did not know this was based on a novel by Tove Jansson who created Moomins. While the novel and film have nothing to do with the Moomins, they do echo some of the themes that run through those stories.
This is a sweet little film about life, that is so much like life, there is no real false drama, that I am not surprised that the film is off most people's radar (including my own). This is a lovely film about people being reflective and as such it isn't going to play for people who want big and loud and showy or one narrative (this is told in vinettes). In a weird way its a love letter to life.
I want and need to revisit this when I am away from trying to play catch up with the movies of the year.
