The Masterpiece series Maigret is quite good. The series is a modern rethink of the great detective at the start of his career.
The series as it stands now is six episodes spanning three stories. As this posts, I’ve seen the first four episodes, and I am looking forward to the last two. The first story has the newly minted inspector getting in over his head when a murder clashes with a gang of robbers. The second story involves a blackmailer who asks for help because of threats and ends up murdered.
The stories are not so much suspenseful as mysterious. We are traveling along with Maigret as he tries to unknot what is going on. As with many of the novels and the earlier TV adaptions the mystery is an excuse to examine the interaction of the characters and to explore various social themes. People’s relationships are in the fore front because they are key to the mysteries.
I am having a grand time with the series and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
