This You Tube documentary is a look at the rise and fall of the Wagner group in Russia. The paramilitary group was the storm troopers and shock troops for Putin. Things were fine untilYevgeny Prigozhin the head of the group took offense at his men being cannon fodder and rebelled.
I’ve been watching a lot of short You Tube docs on the Ukraine war and Russia. I have been trying to get a better sense of what it’s like in Russia. A lot of them have been pretty good and fill in a lot of details the main news outlets never give us. I stumbled upon THE MAN WHO CHALLENGED PUTIN as a recommendation and I was very pleasantly surprised.
Giving an excellent overview of the power set up in Russia. It explains the why and how something like the Wagner group could be formed in the shadows and then rise to prominence. I would argue that for if you wanted a solid but brief look at how power works in Russia this is the best choice (that I have run across).
If there is any real flaw in the film, it’s that once Prigozhin decides to break with Putin we really don’t get an explanation. It’s at that point that we don’t fully understand who he is or what his motivations are. Yes we see how it all plays out but we don’t truly understand why we got the break.
Despite the stumble at the end, this is a great film and worth a look.
