ESCAPE is kind of dull.
Masao Adachi’s portrait Japanese terrorist Satoshi Kirishima
and resistance to the Japanese government since the end of the second world war
is kind of bland. Shot in a low key style the film requires that you meet it
half way. While I was fine with that it never pulled me in. I was watching
scenes play out but I never was fully connected to them because this felt more
like a performance piece than an actual story. I kept feeling that there should
have been more there.
While not bad, I was
very aware why the film didn’t play NYAFF or Japan Cuts earlier this year.
A miss
