In a dystopian future a woman is sentenced to a year of house arrest after miscarrying a baby in the wake of her husband being murdered. Trapped at home she has to deal with an abusive parole officer, ghosts and a psychotic boyfriend who wants to control her every move.
Made when this sort of dystopian world could be viewed as a
satire HOUSE OF ASHES is now more and more not funny because in places like
Texas the rights of woman, especially reproductive rights, are going farther
right than those in Afghanistan. The world this operates in is now very close
to happening. As such it is a dire warning about our future.
As a horror film I think it’s just okay. The problem is that
the script is set up in such away that we can pretty much guess how this is
going to go. We know that everyone outside of our heroine is bad, more so if
they are male. I never connected and just had the film wash over me.
And while I have issues with the film over all I do have to say Fayna Sanchez kicks ass. Can she do more leads please?
It’s not bad, it just wasn’t great (though in fairness I know several people who loved this when this played Brooklyn Horror last year)
