My First And Last Film (2019) Milwaukee Film Festival 2019

Director Tracey Thomas turns 60 and decides that she wants to investigate what it means to turn 60. She then begins to interview various people about being that age. However things begin to change when her partner gets ill and dies things change....

This is a philosophical essay/portrait/documentary / very meta exploration of life, death and everything in between. It's a film that is cinematic quest to find out what it all means and how Thomas is forced to cope with some of the things life unexpectedly throws at her. It is exactly the sort of film that an experienced filmmaker (this really is Thomas's first attempt at making a film) would never do, and as a result is infinitely more profound than we ever could have hoped.

To be certain the film is uneven, but at the same time the fact that the film was made by some one who wasn't playing by the rules means we get unexpected turns. Thomas, or her surrogates, aked atypical questions and shot things that most other people would never think of. The result is we are not watching a film but being part of her grand experiment, but also her life. There are no walls, there just is people and places and it all bleeds off the screen.

I am in awe of this film since it doesn't seem to be a film so much as a living document that we can and will interact with over time, not just the run time, but the time in our lives. Watching the film I was very aware that how the film is seen will be determined by how old you are. I'm not that far removed from turning 60 and I am struggling with some of the issues raised. I can relate to the discussions. However, I suspect that someone younger, like the 30 year old selves discussed in the film will take a different view of the film...and then assuming they are wise enough to revisit the film years down the road will find their thoughts on the film changing as they experience the passage of time themselves.

You will forgive me for not doing a deep dive on the film but I am still processing it. I suspect that the film will be haunting me for days to come. I suspect that I probably should not be reviewing the film  so close to seeing it, but I think that if I wait for the right time, I will be weeks and months down the road. For better or worse MY FIRST AND LAST FILM is a much too important film not to be on your radar, and so I raced to get something up to tie in with the World Premiere.

Frankly I don't know if you will like the film. I don't know what I fully think of it myself, however I know that it has gotten my head going a like a quintuple shot of espresso- which is something few films ever do.  For that alone the film is recommended. And it's also recommended because love it or loath it it is a film you will have to engage with, whether you want to or not.

See this film.

Milwaukee Film Festival: ‘Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,’ ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc,’ ‘Paris Is Burning’ Events Lead Dynamic Retrospective Films

MILWAUKEE – Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019 – The 11th annual Milwaukee Film Festival, presented by Associated Bank, will underscore its long-running commitment to bringing audiences the best in film – regardless of whether the film was made in 2019, Milwaukee Film announced on Thursday. This year’s dynamic set of retrospective films, many of which will present well-known films in a new light, showcase the range and quality of the 15-day Festival, which will take place Oct. 17-31.

Among the most notable retrospectives are screenings of “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” with cast members in attendance; “The Passion of Joan of Arc” presented with a live performance of an original score; and “Paris Is Burning,” paired with a Festival keynote talk by the film’s director.

“No matter what our audiences love most about film, these events will spark the discovery, the thrill and the passion of cinema that we all share,” said Cara Ogburn, Festival director at Milwaukee Film. “We are elated to have such incredible guests who will help extend the already-special experience of the Milwaukee Film Festival.”

“Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me” will screen on Tuesday, Oct. 29, followed by an extended conversation with actors Ray Wise (Leland Palmer) and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer). A film afterparty will give fans of the film and TV show a chance to celebrate the 1992 David Lynch-directed cult classic beyond the theater.

Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 silent masterpiece, “The Passion of Joan of Arc,” brings historical events to life in its depiction of the trial and execution of Joan of Arc. On Friday, Oct. 18, contemporary electronic composer George Sarah will lead Milwaukee-based musicians in performing his original score alongside the film. His soundtrack was first performed in 2010.

The iconic 1990 documentary “Paris Is Burning,” directed by Jennie Livingston, documents New York City’s drag ball culture through the late 1980s and the African American, Latinx and LGBTQIA+ communities that created it. A newly restored version of the film will be followed by a Q&A with Livingston, who will also deliver a keynote speech during the Festival.

The Festival will also present “Showgirls” (1995) in 35mm, paired with the 2019 documentary “You Don’t Nomi,” which explores the film’s journey into a cult classic. Additional retrospective films slated for the Milwaukee Film Festival include Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “The Birds” (1963); Milwaukee-made “Coven” (1997), directed by Mark Borchardt and presented in 35mm; animated classic “The Last Unicorn” (1982); and the traditional Festival screening of Talking Heads documentary “Stop Making Sense” (1984).

Jack Hazan’s groundbreaking 1974 film “A Bigger Splash,” a documentary about artist David Hockney’s breakup with his longtime partner that has only been made available in the U.S. this year, will also be screened during the Festival.

Tickets for all Milwaukee Film Festival screenings and events, including these titles and over 300 more, will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, Oct. 3. Milwaukee Film Members get an early opportunity to purchase tickets with discounted pricing, starting on Tuesday, Oct. 1. For more information on becoming a Milwaukee Film Member, fans can visit mkefilm.org/membership.

Films listed above may be ticketed at premium prices. Full Festival passes, as well as voucher packages that can be exchanged for tickets to non-premium screenings, are currently available at mkefilm.org/tickets.

Additional films and events will be announced throughout September, and the full Festival schedule is expected to be released on Thursday, Sept. 26.

2019 Milwaukee Film Festival Dates Announced
Film submissions for the annual event are now being accepted

MILWAUKEE – Tuesday, January 15, 2019 – The 2019 Milwaukee Film Festival, presented by Associated Bank, will run Thursday, October 17 - Thursday, October 31, 2019. Milwaukee Film’s annual 15-day festival will include feature films, shorts programs, education screenings, post-film conversations, panels, and parties. The event screened more than 300 films and welcomed nearly 80,000 attendees in 2018, making it one of the 10 largest film festivals in the country.

"Last year’s move to later fall dates proved successful, and we are excited to remain at the end of October," states Jonathan Jackson, CEO and artistic director of Milwaukee Film. "Bringing the best of independent cinema to Milwaukee audiences has been a goal since day one and the shift in dates allowed us the opportunity to secure major titles that are now in awards season conversations. We look forward to discovering the best new films and presenting them to our audiences at our festival's eleventh edition."

This announcement comes in conjunction with the opening of the festival’s Call for Entries. Works of all genres, forms, and lengths will be considered. The deadline for all entries is July 1, 2019. Notably, submission is free for all films and, for the fourth consecutive year, the festival will offer to pay for all works screened at the annual event.
The entry form and complete information regarding eligibility for the 2019 Milwaukee Film Festival Call for Entries is available at mkefilm.org/for-filmmakers/call-for-entries. Questions about submissions may be directed to entry@mkefilm.org.
