Grace Point (2023) Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2023

GRACE POINT has young man being driven to a rehab facility by his father. When the pair are stopped on the road and the father is shot the young man is forced to flee into the woods chased by bad guys, demons and his addiction.

I hate to say this but GRACE POINT doesn’t work pretty much from the get go. There is no problem with the cast or the filmmaking, but the plotting of the script. The problem is that the shooting that sets everything in motion is poorly staged. It’s an out of left field event that just happens and results in a huge WTF of the wrong sort. Basically the car over heats, the father gets out of the car  to check the car when two trucks full of guys show up and essentially just shoot him. We have no idea what prompted it, it just happens and since none of the guys in the trucks look pissed off enough, we don’t know where it comes from. There feels as though there should be a set up but there isn't. And because of how it staged we suddenly realize what the entire arc of the film is going to be and it totally removes all suspense.

I was disappointed.

The cast is here, the set pieces are fine, we just know what the denouncement is going to be.

Not really recommended.
