This is a look at the life, wealth and music of singer Andrea Bocelli. It is a look at those things in that order.
Okay, full disclosure. I am a fan of Bocelli. I have a number of his albums. I am also a fan of the director Cosima Spender. Years ago I interviewed her at Tribeca and it is still one of my favorite memories of the festival. I say that because I am not a fan of this film.
Coming off as two hour episode of the old Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous TV show, the film spends a lot of time showing us Bocelli's wealth and life. It isn't until about half way into the film that we are really told about the music. Yes there is some, but not enough to keep me fully enaged.
To be fair the film has some great moments and stories in it. I loved Bocelli listening to a soccer final and being upset the game will be played when he is performing. He threatens to have the game playing in his ear as he performs. There are a few other crazy stories we haven't heard mixed into some we have such as how Zucchero had Bocelli sing a song because he hoped Pavarotti would record it. As the story goes Pavarotti said he wasn't needed because Bocelli had done such a grand job. What I had never heard was that Pavarotti still recorded the song.
While this isn't a bad film, it really isn't compelling. Given my choice I would have come in half way in and missed all the talk.
For die hard fans only.
