Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't (2025) Venice 2025

Retired professor, whose life is orderly and stress free, has his life turned upside down when his daughter turns up on his doorstep, with her kids, needing to get away from her husband because of marital strife. This forces him to rethink how he has been living his life.

Doing pretty much as you expect, while leaving out some cliche moments, DAMNED IF YOU DO is an absolute charmer. Beautifully constructed, with characters who you fall in love with, this is a film that is going to put a smile on your face. This is a perfect example of why we don't mind seeing or hearing the same stories over and over again, because the telling is so good that that we forget we know the story.

I went into the film uncertain of what I was going to feel. The write up made it seem like it was going to be old hat, but the truth was the cast, aided and abated by a great script, made me fall in love with it. These were not your typical movie characters, but something closer to real. Yes, their words could be pithy and spot on in ways life isn't, but the way the actors revealed their souls made them people we wanted to hang out with.

I loved this film.

Just premiering at Venice, this is a film you are going to want to run to see when it finally plays near you.
