Spurred on by a cold war Swedish pamphlet about what to do if the enemy attcks, a farmhand re-enforces his home to withstand an attack and keep his family and friends safe.
This is a beautiful black and white film with a great performance by Denis Lavant as the farmer. As always Lavant is a hypnotic individual who can pull you in and keep you engaged when everything else isn't quite working. This is a good thing because REDOUBT doesn't quite work.
While the film looks great, has a compelling central performance and has some wonderful moments, I don't think the film ever comes together. The film most certainly seems to be heading somewhere, the problem is I'm not certain it gets there. My reaction at the end of the film was less satisfaction and more "is that all?"
Is it a bad film? No, there are too many good bits in the film for that. The problem for me the conclusion just didn't connect the way it should have.
Worth a look, especially if you are a fan od Denis Lavant.
