Appofeniacs (2025) Fantastic Fest 2025

This is a (mostly) well acted and well made horror film about someone making deep fakes that turn people's lives upside down.

Despite the film being technically wonderful and containing some killer set pieces (the opening will keep you watching to the end) the film ultimately never clicked with me. The issue is it is such a perfectly constructed machine there is no soul in it.  This is all about looking good and fucking with the audience to get the filmmakers noticed they made a film where early on you start to watch the whirring mechanism of the film at the expense of the story and characters. I didn't care because there weren't people on screen, just pieces to move around and break at the appropriate time. The dialog is perfectly polished with lines you only hear from a screenwriter who polished each line to absolute perfection. No one talks like a real person.

Yea, it works as a show piece for the director and crew, but its not something that exists to make you go wow in an empty sort of way.
