I am not a fan of horror films that try to link into some fad or wave of something. The attempts to get social media or tik tok or whatever into a plot line more often than not feels half baked. Then again most modern horror films are half baked with the construction aimed at remaining in a formula and a with and ending that ends in a sequel.
My dislike is such that I was shocked that I really liked THE CURSE. The less I say the better about the plot but know it involves a young woman who investigates the death of a friend znd finds that the friend, and soon herself may have been cursed. She then sets off to find the source,
I know that isn't detailed, but I went into the film kind of blind. Yes, I picked it from the list of Fantastic Fest titles but at the same time I was so awash in films that I didn't remember what plot went with what film.
What hooked me was the opening sequence. I young woman is chased down a dark road, as she tries to flee, she gets run over. What struck me wasn't what happened, but how it was presented, the death, like many others, was rooted in reality. Having friends and family in the rescue/emergency business I heard tales of the terrible things and what happens here is real. There is a realness that makes things sickening.
The realness continues into the film as scenes play out less like a horror film and more like a real-life drama. What I mean by that is there isn't an overly done tone.
The result is a film that bothered me a great deal.
