Scott Adkins stars as WW2 airman who is shot down over the Philippines before the Bataan Death March. Thrown into a prison camp, he battles a Japanese commander who wants to break his body and spirit. He doesn’t break and makes plans to try and escape with some other prisoners before they are moved.
Hailed by many on the festival circuit as Adkins best film
and role, I was slightly disappointed. Don’t get me wrong Adkins is solid as a
man who can’t be beat, and whose hair is always absolutely perfect, but the script is beyond basic with no real meat. It is
ultimately just Adkins getting into fights, with a pretend discussion of honor. While I enjoyed the hell out of the
action, I was very glad I didn’t pay big bucks to see this in a theater.
Is it worth seeing? Absolutely. But just don’t listen to the
talk of it being Adkins best.
