THE VILE was the best of the films I saw before Fantastic Fest. It is also one of the best horror films of the year.
The plot has Amani dealing with the return of her husband from
a trip. He has returned to their home in Abu Dabi with a new wife. Since he
still doesn’t have a son, he feels that a new wife might be the answer. Things
quickly slide as the new addition takes over the house. She also worms her way
into the heart of Amani‘s daughter. There is something wrong with her, and as Amani investigates she finds that there is a very good reason to be afraid.
Chilling from the first frame to the last THE VILE is a
genuinely scary movie. It’s not that there is a difference between cultures,
this is genuinely scary movie with a wicked sound design and use of light, dark
and shadow that puts all of Hollywood to shame. You will be frightened just by
looking at the compositions. The script
keeps us tethered, there is nothing too way out, instead there is real people
dealing with terrible things. I didn’t
know where this was going to go.
Beyond the wonderful people behind the cameras, there is a
glorious cast of actors who sell their roles. Where people in Hollywood frequently
phone in their performances in genre films Bdoor Muhammad and the rest of the cast put it
out there as if their lives depend upon it. It a wonderful thing that make us
fall in love with them and hope nothing bad happens.
This is a great surprise find and highly recommended.
