One of the highest grossing films in Hong Kong cinema is this tale of a hostess club in Hong Kong that is on it's last legs. The new owner has given the current manager, and her ex, 30 days to get the club back into shape.
Running almost 3 hours, it is a half an hour longer than the theatrical cut, this "comedy" is a lot to take in. Glitzy and glamourous this is a film that is very manufactured and very much of a type. It wants to be a good time distraction but at the same time it wants to say something deep and meaningful about the decline of Hong Kong. I'm not certain it is always successful.
Part of the problem, at least in this version, is that there is too much here. The pacing is off and the film kind of runs on and on. Some bits feel long. The tone shifts awkwardly. This version is supposed to be harder edged, and that's there, but at the same time the film doesn't seem to be balance the humor and the seriousness.
While not bad, there was a point where I kind of tuned out because the film didn't really feel focused nor was I certain as to why it was taking so long to go forward.
