BURN (2025) Japan Cuts 2026

A young woman escapes her family and religious cult where she was regularly beaten into a life on the street where she is abused.

This is a dark memory play, with flashes of magical realism, related to us by the young woman at the center. This is a kind of feel bad film with a few rays of hope thrown in. I winced regularly.

One of the best films I've seen at this year's Japan Cuts BURN makes taking a trip to the darkside something you want to do. Sure you don't want to live the life seen here, but the tale is so brilliantly told that you will not mind spending a couple of hours being there. I say this because I saw this with in quick succession of other down beat films playing at Cuts and NYAFF. I should have wanted to flee into the night, but BURN is so perfectly told that I kind of wanted to go again when it was done. (I'm a glutton for punishment)

If you want to take a walk on the dark side see this film.
