Lovely Death (2026) NYAFF 2026

Shot vertical so it will look good on a cellphone, LOVELY DEATH is a good enough film that you will wish they had shot it in some other manner.

The plot of the film has three girls attempting to kill themselves but death having other ideas, He won't let them die.

What starts off as an amusing film about three women trying to end their lives becomes a moving tale about connecting to life. Its a film that I am weirdly haunted by.

At the same time I hate how it was shot. I have no issue with it being a vertical film, I have an issue with the fact that director Lee-Won Sook didn't quite figure out how to use the camera and block the shots. Because the image is so narrow almost every shot is shot so the actors fill the screen. often its one person but more often everyone stands close so they all can be in the frame. It feels wrong. Also wrong is the fact that the film is constantly from person to person and thing to thing. The fil has more cuts than many rapid fire action films since we have to bounce from image to image to see reactions or objects.I stopped watching the film for awahile and just watched the editing.

At a certain point I stopped doing that and just tried to ignore the technical tricks and tried to watch the film and not be distracted. What I realized was that hidden by the conceit this is a rather good look at the meaning of life that would have been a truly great film without the distractions.

Worth a look for the curious, though odds are you are going to be annoyed by the edits
