Daddy (2023) Cinejoy: Cinequest Virtual Festival 2023 Oxford Film Festival 2023

In a dystopian future the ability of men to father children is restricted. Four men are sent to a retreat in the country to work out if they can be fathers. However once they arrive no one is there. As the men try to make sense of where everything they wrestle with if they are ready for fatherhood.

Comedy drama and dystopian scifi mix uneasily in a film that is trying too hard to be too many things. What exactly is the film trying to be? I’m not sure. I’m not sure the filmmakers know either as we get talk of fatherhood mixed with paranoid talk about being watched.  The pieces don’t fully hang together with the result the film doesn’t really stick with us.  The film ended and was like that’s nice, what’s next.

An interesting misfire.
