Elemental (2023) Tribeca 2023

In a world divided into the elements of earth, air, fire and water, a young woman made of fire falls in love with a young man of water.

Uneven animated film looks like several films that we've seen before. The most obvious is ZOOTOPIA. When you see this film you will have to be patient and wait until the film finds it's own footing. Once it finds it's footing it's gangbusters.

This is a film that has a lot going on. Its a romance that also is a look at the immigrant experience as well as look at the haves and have nots.  It's a film that is trying to be more than just a romance. That's a nice idea, but the the social commentary in the film is not really well done. While the film has its heart in the right place it sadly doesn't pull it off. Threads feel stunted as if the the the bosses quashed any ideas of it pushing boundaries.

On the other hand if you can strip everything away and just look at the romance this film kicks ass. In all seriousness when we focus on the young lovers this film is just magic. On its own terms the romance is one of the great ones of the year.

I was delighted by the final twenty minutes and was teary with the ending.

In the end I really liked this. I was supposed to leave the screening early to go to another one, but I stayed to the glorious end.

Recommended.
