Tribeca Short Takes - PERPETRATOR, HEYVIKTOR!, LAROY, THE ART OF HUMAN FLIGHT, TAKE CARE OF MAYA

PERPETRATOR
Mannered horror film about killer and a young woman who gets powers on her 18th birthday. Deliberate and deliberately obtuse at times this is a film intent on showing off the skill of the director. Another in a long line of Tribeca 2023 films were the score is asked to carry much of the film, I never could get into it. I was asking way too many questions right out of the box and it kept me distanced.
Pass this film

HEY VIKTOR!
Actor Cody Lightning makes a meta comedy about himself trying to deal with being an out of work actor who's biggest achievement was a film made when he was a kid (SMOKE SIGNALS). He gets backing but it comes at a cost. Funny, if obvious comedy has laughs, but it's wildly overlong and somewhere around the half way point I was done even if I was till laughing.

LAROY
Nebish in the town LaROy discovers his wife is having an affair and ends up being mistaken for a contract killer.  Whether you like this film or not will be determined by how you react to the nebish, his wife and his brother. I hated their stock nature and I lost interest in what happened when I realized I would have rather seen a movie about any other character in the film except them.

SECRET ART OF HUMAN FLIGHT
Off kilter film about a man mourning the death of his wife who gets hooked up with a guy who says he can fly. This is a charming film with its own bent sense of reality. If you can take  it on it's own terms (it took me two tries) you will have a good time.

TAKE CARE OF MAYA
Very good look at what happened to a family when  young girl was prescribed a course of treatment for a disease that no one could diagnose and they got in trouble for it. This is a frightening tale that will make you never want to go to a hospital again.
