More Tribeca Short Takes: COLD COPY, THE LINE, STRANGE PATH, FIRST TIME FEMALE DIRECTOR, MELODY OF LOVE

COLD COPY
Young woman who wants to be a journalist gets into a course with the bitch on wheels queen of TV journalists. We've been here before any number of times before in other situations (WHIPLASH anyone?) If you're good with that dive in.

THE LINE
A young man joins a fraternity and has to choose when a young woman and questionable hazing practices make him question his choice. While I know that this is a well done film, the fact I had nothing to do with fraternities in my college days made this less interesting for me. Additionally the film seems to be constructed in such a way that characters seem to be there simply to bring up themes the film wants to discuss, making it less a drama then a polemic.

STRANGE PATH
Good small film about a filmmaker going home should not have played at Tribeca. A small film that requires a special audience willing to give it its full attention and not being part of a festival with 250+ films. I really liked this but I know I need to see this down the road away from the crush of this festival.

FIRST TIME FEMALE DIRECTOR
You have to click with Chelsea Peretti's sense of humor for this to work. Absurd, kind of dumb and very much like a sitcom you are either going to love this film (the audience I saw this with was roaring with laughter)  or this is going to be a torture test. I found this painfully unfunny.

MELODY OF LOVE
Another small film that's at the wrong festival. A gorgeous film with a great jazz soundtrack this film about a musician who has to choose whether to stay where he is or move to Europe it's an absolute delight viewing experience. However because this tiny gem of a film is wedged in between big flashy films it's going to get lost. I enjoyed it, but I will be the first to tell you I need to see it away from the crush of films.
