Hideaki Anno's soaked updating of the classic TV show is a nonstop thrill ride. It's an odd mix of modern sensibility and throw back plotting and special effects. If you are fan of the original series you are going to eat this up.
The plot of the film follows what happens the birth of the original Kamen Rider, an augmented human who who has a helmet that make him look like a grasshopper. He is unlike the other augs in that he has free will and a brain. He's tasked with finding an eliminating the head of SHOCKER, the evil organization trying to take over the world.
I was never a big fan of the original series. The problem for me is that outside of the action there wasn't much that I could latch on to. Sure I was a fan of Ultraman which had similar flaws, but that had giant monsters which were my favorites from an early age.
To be perfectly honest this film is just a bigger bloodier version of the TV show. Sure there is some rewriting of the details like the other Shin films, but it is the TV show on the big screen. While that should have made me not like the film, this time out I was amused.
To be honest I don't think it's high art, but it is a great deal of fun. This is the film that was clearly the film that the six year old in director Anno wanted to make and we are better for it.
