Reality Winner (2023) starts Wednesday in NYC before playing across America

Portrait of Reality Winner, the US Intelligence officer who was sent to prison for several years  for releasing a single document saying that Russia was interfering in the US Presidential election. Her story is told by her friends, family and herself.

Seeking to tell her story Reality Winner sat down and told her story. She wants to correct the story put out by the government that she was a horrible person who sought to do the government harm. What she was doing was simply releasing that the election in 2016 was influenced by the Russians. She sought to end the debate and instead ended up in the middle of a firestorm.

This is a very good attempt at correcting a wrong. Winner was not and is not a crazed person trying to bring down the government but one person doing the right thing. What she did is nothing compared to the taking of documents by the President who used her as a boogeyman to scare the masses.

I really liked this film and it's low key approach to telling WInner's story. While many people maybe turned off because there are no grand moments and screaming and yelling compared to how her story was portrayed in the main stream media.  It's a beautiful change of pace. It's also a film that makes clear that what she did was not treasonous or bad but vital to the continued functioning of the democracy.

In age when people have done worse and have been revered for it, it's an important thing to see that there are actually people out there willing to do what's right despite the cost.
