DOC NYC Capsule Reviews: MOTHER WITH A GUN, THE UNIVERSITY, and WINTER AT WESTBETH

MOTHER WITH A GUN
Portrait of the Jewish Defense League which was formed to protect Jews from anti-Semitic violence. This film left me troubled and feeling kind of split as to how I feel about it and the group. While I believe everyone has a right to defend themselves some of the things that the group does- crashing a book signing in France where 30 people were beaten with iron bars.
An intriguing film

MOTHER WITH A GUN plays November 15 and 16 at DOC NYC

WINTER AT WESTBETH
Utterly charming look at the the Westbeth Artists Housing in New York City. Where artists can live in rent controlled apartments and create. Focusing on Edith Stephens,a video artist; Dudley WIlliams, a dancer and Ilsa Gilbert a poet the films lets us into the lives of three wonderful New Yorkers and the place they call home.
An absolute joy and a must see.

WINTER AT WESTBETH pays November 16 and 17 at DOC NYC.

THE UNIVERSITY
80 minute commercial for the Singularity University in California. Full of lots of the future is great talk and lots of happy people the film tries way too hard to show the wonders of what is ahead of us. Its rah rah attitude wore me down and after 20 minutes I tuned out because I felt I was being hard sold something instead of being shown something wonderful.

THE UNIVERSITY plays November 17 at DOC NYC
