Metal Messiah (1975) Fantasia 2026

Tibor Takacs' first film has been restored and come to light...

The first film from the man who gave us the classic THE GATE, I MADMAN and numerous fun horror and science fiction films began his career with an off the wall film about an alien savior who becomes a rock star(?) or something. It's a film noir musical science fiction film that looks at times like it was made by a high school kid. Sure Takacs was about twenty when he made it, but geeze its a mess. Its based on a rock opera that I'm guessing was very much influenced by glam rock, Bowie, The Man Who Fell to Earth and Rocky Horror.

I truly have no words other than I would recommend this for Mystery Science 3000, except there is nudity.

Only inthe final section of the film of the rock concert and what follows does the film seem to work. However its too little too late. Before that the cheapness, the poor songs, weak staging and mix of styles undermines what we are seeing.

I want to see it with smart ass friends who love to riff.

Frankly seeing this film I have to either think that Takacs learned a hell of a lot from this since he went on to make some classic (and some of my favorite) films or the material was bad to start. I'm guessing a little of the formar and a lot of the later.

Worth a look for those collecting WTF films.

Dinogator (2024) hits VOD tomorrow

Various people go into the backwaters for a photoshoot and vacation and end up having to fight for their lives when a giant dinogator attacks.

Jim Wynorski's goofy and kind of serious film is the sort of thing that used to be direct  to Syfy, and now fills VOD slots. It’s a film to watch with films while you get drunk and make fun of it. That’s not a bad thing if you like these sort of things, but it’s not now, nor has it ever been high art. This is a goofy film with only the barest pretense of seriousness.

The dinogator has a gator head, but the truth is it’s really a giant snake that resembles the snake version of Xenomorph from alien that was released as toy a bunch of years ago. It looks cool. And the truth is the compositing of the monster into some scenes is better than most big budgeted Hollywood films.

If you like this sort of thing, you are going to love this. If not stay away.

Tiki Tiki (1971) Fantasia 2024

Restoration of a 1971 animated film that mixed animated sequences about the executives in an ape run world (remember Planet of the Apes was huge when this was made) and mixed it with a Soviet children's film Aybolit-66, that was a Doctor Doolittle rip off to tell the story of a filmmaker making a film about humans sailing to Tiki Tiki to rescue apes and fight pirates. It's all dubbed to play like a WHAT'S UP TIGERLILY film.

This is a painful viewing experience to thanks to the really awful Soviet footage. It's so bad I can't imagine Rifftrax, The Mads or MST3K ever touching this. Yes, well over an hour of Aybolbit-66 was removed but what remains is so WTF as to be near unwatchable. It appears to have been inserted randomly.

This might have worked but the studio messed it up. In reading on the film, it was clear the studio didn't know what they wanted and waffled as to whether to make this for kids or make it for the midnight films crowd, or as one person said the kindergarten set or stoned high schoolers. The lack of knowing who the audience was going to be made it a film for no audience.

Avoid this turd at all costs.

BAD THINGS (2023) Tribeca 2023

BAD  THINGS is...bad

Its a collection of bad choices that come together to make a film that had the audience talking to the screen almost from the start and had me roaring with uncontrolled laughter at the end when people are chainsawed to death in a busy shopping mall parking lot and no one bats an eye.

How and why Shudder picked it up will be a question that will haunt you for most of the running time.

The plot of the film has several friends going to a hotel in upstate New York to get it ready to sell. As their relationships unravel, there appears to be a killer in the hotel, who maybe one of the women, since several of them appear not to have any sort of grip on reality.

Despite a cast of game performers, BAD THINGS is awful.

Blame either a script that makes no sense or a film crew that removed about 40 minutes of plotting. This is a film that will make you wonder what the hell is going on almost from the first frame. Sequences don't match, for example an early seen takes place in an indoor swimming pool where the girls relax. A couple of hours later the pool is completely empty. One girl watches videos on how to run a hotel. The woman in the videos is played by Molly Ringwald...who it turns out is her mother...WTF? Conversations are constantly referencing things as if we know what that means- but end up never explained- such as the relationship of all the women.

I have no words - though I did have hysterical laughter during the final 20 minutes of the film as each turn gets more outrageously stupid.

I can not believe this was picked up by a festival or by Shudder and was actually watched.

What a disaster.

Revenge of Dr X aka Venus Fly Trap aka Revenge of the Venus Fly Trap (1970)

This review has been sliding through the Unseen to be posted pile for literally years until it perfectly lined up with Christmas.

This may or may not have been written by Ed Wood Jr. I say that because some sources over the years have said that isn't the case while others have said it is. The Alpha Video release, under the title REVENGE OF THE VENUS FLY TRAP in newly minted opening credits specifically states something that has never been specifically stated anywhere that I've ever seen. Personally I don't know if this is Wood's work, owing to the fact that this is just so damn loopy that I'm not sure he would have come up with it.

The plot has a military scientist taking time off as he nears a mental break down. For whatever reason he decides to crossbreed a man and a venus fly trap with the resulting monster being just one of the weirder things ever out there.

It wasn't until relatively recently that I actually found a copy of this film. Long rumored but not really seen this was a film I found I was trying to track down because it just sounded so damn wacky. When it finally turned up, in a multifilm DVD pack I wasn't disappointed. This is pure insanity that demands to be seen and made fun of (RiffTrax has done just that).

Full of weird dialog, all over the place performances and a what were they thinking monster. RETURN OF  DR X is just a bad movie lovers dream. One of the truly great so bad it's good films this film is funny for all the wrong reasons. Its a film where you wonder how it was that adults had anything to do with this. It is a film I put on when i need to remind myself of the stupid things people who should know better do occasionally.

An absolute must for bad film lovers. For everyone else get your friends and get ready to pick on a classic.

LAWS OF THE UNIVERSE:The Age of Elohim (2021)

Long ago when Lord Elohim was on earth a dark force traveled across the universe to destroy him and the world.

This visually gorgeous film has stunning images and mind blowing sequences from start to finish. This is a film I would have loved to have seen on a big screen simply because it looks so good...

However the plot, the dialog and the songs are so gawd awful that this is easily one of the worst and silliest films of the year. I can't believe that adults made this thing.

The film is a weird riff on religion mashed with creatures from space. Names are all from the various religious texts, with a heavy reliance on Judeo-Christian myths and legends. Everything is declared as if it has some deep meaning. While the songs sound lovely the translations caused me to double over in pained laughter.

This is every bad anime cliché in one place.

The Woman In The Window (2021)

Long delayed because of poor test screenings and Covid, THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW hits home screens thanks to Netflix and we are worse off for it until the riffers get ahold of it.

Agoraphobic woman lives estranged from her husband and daughter in a huge house in NYC. She watches old movies, drinks, contemplates suicide and watches her neighbors. When she thinks she sees her neighbor murdered everyone thinks she's crazy....

If you are going to rip off every  variation of REAR WINDOW  over the course of 100 minutes you probably shouldn't open your film with a still from the classic, unless you are going to hit it out of the park. THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW can't even bunt it past home plate.

Woefully derivative and badly written (Tracy Letts had a hand in this, really?) the film manages to strand its cast (Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, Julianne Moore, Anthony Mackie, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tracy Letts) in a gawd awful mess that their combined talents can't save.

Even allowing that that the dialog is dreadful, the real problem here is we have been here before too many times. There are no surprises and once things are set up, hell even before thanks to the REAR WINDOW picture, we know how this is going to go.  When know it so well that we can write it even before all of the pieces are in place.

To be honest I was not going to cover this film but the reviews were so awful I thought I'd take a look because the film couldn't be that bad.

Yea it could.

Avoid at all costs unless the Rifftrax, MADS or MST3K crews take a stab at it.

Cry Havoc (2019) or what if Charles Bronson fought Jason or Leatherface?

Charles Bronson lookalike Robert Bronzi is back in one crazy ass film.

A rich man wanted by the police for making snuff films is interviewed by a reporter. He is up to no good. At the same time a cop (Bronzi) is looking for a missing woman. He clashes head on with the security team protecting the rich guy and the serial killer.

This is my first run in with Robert Bronzi and he isn't bad. Sure he's not great, but he is adequate which in an unbridled bloodbath like this is enough. All he has to do is fight, shoot and look tough, which is real easy for him.

Mind bending from the first frame CRY HAVOC is completely nuts. Basically Bronzi shoots people and rescues a few women while Havoc, the masked killer who looks like the love child of Jason Vorhees and Leatherface kills people in gruesome ways. This film may lack in many areas but not in the blood and gore department. Other than a way too long talk between the reporter and the rich guy this film pretty much never stops being violent.

Allegedly a sequel to the earlier DEATH KISS, I'm gobsmacked enough by this film to want to go back and see where this insanity started.

Absolutely not a good film in any conventional sense this is a kind of weird film nerd wish fulfillment for anyone ever wondered what might have happened if Bronson fought Jason back in the day. It entertains by its weirdness and  its mere existing. I hate mad slasher films but this film is just so out there I couldn't stop watching.

I'm sorry I can't put words together. I watched most of the film just mumbling WTF over and over again. This is a film the defies description, logic, reason and the definition of good or bad. It is a pile of poo, but at the same time it's golden its complete insanity.

I recommend the film but I completely understand this film may not work for you unless you like the strange, the weird and Mystery Science Theater 3000 material films you can watch with your friends and rip apart.

CRY HAVOC is on VOD today (god help us)

Abominable (2020)

Don't be fooled this was filmed in the woods somewhere far from any mountains
ABOMINABLE is.

Super low budget horror film has a willing cast and some good gore effects but not much else in this film about a team of researchers trying to sort out hat happened to the group before them. They were doing research on a mythic flower that was guarded by the Yeti.

Looking like they put the whole dollar ninety eight budget on screen ABOMINABLE is a heartfelt but not quite  good enough horror film. Normally I would be adverse to make jokes about a budget but things look so anemic (everyone seems to be wearing their on cold weather gear, the lab for research is a big room with random plastic sheets hanging from the ceiling a white board with math problems on it, and a tent in the middle of the floor).  Its supposed to be a place people would work but ts in an electronic dead zone where no radio signals can reach. Really? The promo material talks about the Himalayan mountains but it doesn't remotely look like any photo I've ever seen- and the ending which has a character sitting in a ranger car makes it clear that this isn't Tibet no matter what the dialog says.

I threw up my hand when 15 minutes into the film we see the monster (which looks good from a distance) beat up a team member. all we see is his hand and arm and it looks like a person wearing a monster glove and a white furry jacket-I mean you see down the sleeve. Later on you can see the  the pieces of the suit and the outline of the down vest under the body piece. Still later you see the monster standing, his "skin" folded in ways that only ill fitting off the rack costumes fold. No poverty row gorillas from the 30's were ever this bad.

Frankly if they had spent a bit more money and had a bit more talent behind the camera this might have been something. The story has possibilities on it's own terms. There is enough here that despite the gaping flaws this might have been something more than a cash grab or something perfect for RiffTrax or MST3K. (Though the music is so loud we'd never hear any of the riffs).

While this is most certainly a film that you will want to roast with lots of friends (it will be funnier than the comics at your local comedy club) it is not otherwise recommended.

A quick rant:

While I completely understand that film is a mercenary business- but why would you actually make something that sucks? Why would you not try and change things up so that the film doesn't get lost in laughable land?

For example why keep all the talk of the Yeti and put a mountain on the poster when it's clear it's not set in Tibet. Why not change the dialog? We'll work with you- a bit.

Work with the fact that things went wrong- I mean the film is 64 minutes before end credits. Its clear since something happened since several sequences start in the middle like sections were removed. People run through the woods bloody? How did that happen? Once is fine- but three or more times?

What KILLS me about this film is you have a great cast. One that acts and is invested. You have great makeup and practical effects. Based on that alone you should have had a great film but the rest, all the behind the camera doesn't work and as a result you've shit on the cast and the effects people. While they can show people the film on a highlight reel, the actual film is so mismanaged that it could harm their careers.

Yea I know you sold the film, maybe got your money back, boom on to the next thing. But have some decency and try to rise to the level of the things that work and not remain in the sewer. The only people who are going to want to see this are people tricked by the name and poster.  Yea you'll get an extra buy or two, but you on't get squat long term.

I'm sorry this coulda woulda and shoulda been a gem. Instead it's a half made broken machine with great parts that sadly can't be pulled out of it and saved.

I know you are just trying to make some money- but if you gave a bit more you's have gotten more.

I freaking hate it when producers intentionally release turkeys.

Unseen Films Stay At Home Festival: Film Twenty Three: The Car: Road to Revenge (2019)

42 years after James Brlin stared in THE CAR about a murderous and demonic car terrorizing a desert town a "sequel" appears that has a similar car possessed by the spirit of a dead District Attorney taking out the gang that killed him in the not too distant future.

Weird ass mix of scifi, horror and post apocalyptic gang films seasoned with a weird sartorial style to create a WTF film that is strangely compelling viewing. I'm not saying it's good, its really not, but it is so out there that you have to keep watching. Over and over again I kept asking myself why I was watching but yet I could never look away.

I would love to see the Rifftrax guys do this film.

Over the top, crazy, stupid and the sort of thing yo not only can't look away from but that you want to inflict on drunken friends THE CAR: ROAD TO REVENGE is recommended.

Humanoid (1979)

Screamingly funny and twice as awful Star Wars influenced Italian science fiction film about an evil overlord who looks like Darth Vader but with straps across his face who makes a deal with an evil scientist to help him make an army of invincible humanoids, the first of which is a top billed Richard Kiel

Where to begin? Good looking film (the Vader bit aside) is a complete mess as we have a gentle giant, evil scientist, the force stolen ship designs and some of the most hysterical dialog you've ever heard. You'll be talking to the screen pretty much from the get go as logic goes out the window and stupidity reigns.

I kept wishing that the Riff Trax guys were watching it with me or else some friends aren't afraid to be vocal about the messes they watch.

One of the worst films you'll see all year- not recommended unless you need laughs and are watching this with really witty friends who know how to pick on bad movies.

Taur The Mighty

Taur the Mighty needs to be done on Rifftrax or MST3K. A WTF sword and sandal movie that would be mildly entertaining if the costuming didn’t push it into “you have to be joking” territory.

The film has the mighty Taur taking on the evil Kixios after they kill a king and steal his daughters. What follows is typical (and not wholly bad) muscle man nonsense.

The problem is that costuming is silly beyond belief with heads dresses that will double you over with laughter.

Worth a look for lovers of bad movies. More so if the riffers get a hold of it.

Frankenstein On Campus (1970)

One of the worst films I've seen in ages is a horrible mix of Frankenstein and campus sex film.

After being thrown out of a university in Europe Victor Frankenstein travels to Canada. There he tries to fit in while working on a brain control device with one of is professors.

Long scenes of people partying are mixed with some sex scenes, moments where Victor does weird things and sequences were the students protest the use of computers on the grounds it will dehumanize the world. None of it hangs together despite the fact there are characters in common. That may sound like a no duh statement but at times the various part of this film plays like different films.

This might have been a good bad film except that how Victor Frankenstein is drawn, with a big  stick up his ass, results in a character that grates on us. We don't like him at all and it's painful to be around him. And everything he does is just WTF.

The biggest WTF - and it's the best thing in the film- is the denouncement. Its awesome, it's out of left field and it arrives just as the end credits roll.

This is a burnt turkey of a film and should be avoided.

SUSHI TUSHI OR HOW ASIA BUTTED INTO AMERICAN PRO FOOTBALL

One of the worst comedies of the decade has a desperate football team hiring sumo wrestlers to play on their offensive line.

Suffering from deficiencies on every level (bad cast, bad script) the film is DOA. If you need proof look at the altered visual style the film takes during the football games. clearly using green screen and overlays on the images. Its a desperate attempt to hide that the filmmakers went no where near a football field. Its a failed ploy to trick us into thinking they were clever, but it just looks awful.

The most awful thing of all is the complete lack of understanding of the rules of football and how the pro game works. The fact that the film doesn't understand the game it is about is going to piss off the only potential audience for the the film, drunken football fans. The mishandling of the game is so bad that anyone watching it will turn the film off ten minutes in.

Hands down one of the worst films I've seen in the last decade or two. Its so bad that even MST3K or RiffTrax couldn't improve it since it keeps shooting itself in the foot and you are dumbstruck by its awfulness.

Avoid this film at all costs

(Full disclosure SUSHI TUSHI won the audience award at Kew Gardens  for Best Feature Film.)

Good Manners (2017) NDNF 2018 (spoilers)

Art house meets grindhouse in a film that will satisfy few except those who will believe the WTF turns.

Ana is hired by an expecting single mom to be a live in helper before the baby arrive and then a nanny after.  Things go along swimmingly until Ana begins behaving badly when the moon is full. That is nothing compared to what happens when the baby arrives.

Solid first hour is a really good, if slow, domestic drama of the life and budding romance between the two women. Sure there are hints at what is to come but it's kept largely low key, even if a cat meets a bad end. The film is a compelling drama where you care about the characters and want to see where it's going.

That all changes when the baby is born and the film morphs into  a not quite a horror film crossed with a not quite a Beauty and the Beast drama. Picks up seven years later when Ana is raising the now young boy. Here the film wobbles from pillar to post as it never quite manages to get the tone right. The needing to keep an eye on the boy and his diet, especially at times of the full moon never really works and I kept wanting to ask all sorts of questions about the whys and hows. Things completely fall off the table in the closing minutes when a mob with a modern take on flaming torches appears. I damn near fell on the floor from laughing.

While I know and appreciate what the film is striving to do I don't think the film achieves it. Part of the problem is the fact that this film is 135 minutes.  Its simply way too long. Because we get so much set up the split between now and seven years on makes the film play like two different films with the same casts. The shift is so radical that the film can't really handle the tonal shift.

Then again perhaps the film doesn't know what the tone is supposed to be- Horror? Drama? Fantasy? The first hour is most certainly a thriller but I'm not sure what the second is.

While I have all sorts of plot questions regarding the second half I'm going to focus on two upfront things that don't really help the film. The first is that Miguel Lobo as Joel, the wolf boy, is very uneven in the role. Yes there are times when he nails it, but some of the monster related stuff doesn't quite work, We can see him acting. Certainly he's game but either because of his ability or the editing I never bought it.

The other problem with the second half is in the creature design which is much to cute and cartoony to ever be believable. I chuckled every time I saw it. Frankly I could have accepted it in if Joel was more human and not so wolf like, but he's a wolf with a cute kids face stuck on it its just silly. Worse it doesn't really match up with the new born version we had seen earlier which had a larger snout.

I probably should also pick on the plotting in the second half which has all sorts of problems, not to mention angry townspeople storming with torches, but somehow I find that too easy a target. There are too many points that seem like they were lifted from other films. If they can be lazy in how it cobbled together the various bits from other better films then I can decide to be lazy and not to take it apart piece by piece.

Forgive me I've seen way too many horror/fantasy/genre films. I've seen good and bad. I've forgiven a lot of bad films because they managed to provoke a reaction and set a mood. While I tend to love films that turn out to be about something other than what you think going in, I really hate it when they don't work. Great flips make sitting through questionable moments worth it. A bad story flip makes it all just a waste of time. Despite a great first half and a sputtering second GOOD MANNERS is a waste of time.

Skip it.

A buffet of cinematic turkeys for Thanksgiving

GRIMM'S SNOW WHITE
Syfy-esque disaster has Snow White's father, the king, eaten by a giant lizard and her step mother trying to kill her.

Dumb low budget film is the sort of thing you stare at in disbelief for any number of reasons largely to do with anyone thinking that anyone would actually want to see it. Another question would be why anyone would willingly be in it since I doubt it did anyone's career any good. this is the sort of thing that people probably were blackmailed into being in. I understand they wanted to make a quick buck from piggy backing on a Hollywood Snow White film, but at the same time did they actually think anyone would willingly watch it? I doubt even the Rifftrax guys would touch this.

Avoid at all costs

FIELDS OF THE DEAD (2014)
Seven friends travel to a remote abandoned farm that their college got real cheap to do research. Their they find an ancient book and...well....you saw Evil Dead so you know what happens. Actually do yourself a favor and rewatch Evil Dead instead of this turkey. There ain't nothing new here.

PINK ANGELS (1972)
Until I saw it listed on IMDB as a comedy I thought this story of cross dressing gay bikers was an awful serious film. Looking at as a comedy makes it less WTF, but at the same time its really not that good and very unfunny

FRANKENSTEIN 80 (1974)
So bad it's good (kind of) film about a doctor who makes an anti organ rejection drug which is stolen by a mad scientist who hs mad a frankenstein monster which is going around killing women. It contains nuerous WTF lines including a newscaster talking blandly about the ""a killing in the toilet at the international race"

And while I'm at it:

DRACULA THE IMPALER is crap

VOODOO POSSESSION is crap

MOTHER (aka SOCIAL NIGHTMARE) with Daryl Hannah is a crap TV movie

DARKROOM is okay compared to the other crap

Abar The First Black Superman (1977)

This legendary film was nigh impossible to see for years. I had heard it was so incendiary that no one would run it. I heard it was lost because the distributor was so small it went bankrupt and disappeared. I heard all sorts of weird stories from people who had never seen it but had heard about it...

I eventually picked it up on low budget DVD and put it aside, but it wasn't until Turner Classic ran it that I actually saw it now I'm left wondering what the hell was that?

A black doctor studying heart disease moves into a white neighborhood and is abused by his neighbors. He refuses to move because he needs the large house for his experiments. When a near riot happens outside of his house he is rescued by Abar and his motorcycle driving men. Abar tries to talk the doctor to move back to the ghetto but he refuses.Eventually Abar becomes the doctor's bodyguard.  However once tragedy strikes the doctor gives Abar the serum he had been working on and Abar becomes a god-like being correcting the wrongs of the world.

While the film is very much a political manifesto, the film is also very much an exploitation film with a wicked guitar riff that plays during the occasional action sequences. The film is also completely and utterly out there with several unexpected and "WTF was that" twists and turns. By the time Abar becomes god-like you will be staring at the screen wondering what everyone connected with the film was thinking---and drinking or smoking. Its just out there. One line at the very end almost caused my father and myself to choke to death in complete and utter disbelief. Its one of those lines where you look at each other and go-"did she really just say that?" Oh yes she did.

I have no idea what to say.

Too long by 20 minutes and so goofball at times this film is not going to be for all audiences. At the same time if you want off the beaten path do see this ASAP.

Vampire Hookers (1978)

John Carradine is a poetry spouting Dracula in the Philippines in Vampire Hookers, a late day and drive in and home video staple. It’s a blast if you’re in the right frame of mind.

The film centers on a couple of sailors on shore leave. Looking for love in all the wrong places they end up meeting the bevy of titled beauties who are picking up guys in the local bars and bringing them to their cemetery home where Carradine holds sway. Mirth and no chills result.

If you are looking for a horror film with chills look elsewhere. While there is a little tension, this film has no real scares. Almost everything in it is played for laughs with the result that any late in the game attempts at being frightening are lost. Mostly this is a rather unPC low brow humor. Most of the jokes are funny, but in a that’s so bad I can’t believe I’m laughing this sort of away.

I’ve seen this film any number of times over the years and I’ve always enjoyed it…though almost every time I’ve seen it I was curled up on the couch with friends or family and we picked on it mercilessly. This is a film that cries out for audience interaction and plays better when you are part of the experience.

Bad Batch (2017)

Toward the end of THE BAD BATCH the audience of critics I was with started to laugh. There was remark that was what I knew was an intentional joke occurring but I was unsure if they were laughing with the film or at it. I was curious because there were numerous "serious: moments when I heard laughter, but this was the first real joke where people were laughing. Also I knew several people had walked out of the film. I knew people left because light flooded the screen each time. In the almost 8 years of writing on film I had never seen anyone leave from this particular screening room for the reason that you couldn’t escape without everyone knowing. Critics never want to tip their hands until the reviews post unless they truly hate a film.

Anyway because there was a  sudden burst of laughter, I turned my head so I could see if it was out of delight or pity - and was shocked to discover that the normally non-reactive audience of critics had suddenly morphed into the crowd at that just seen Springtime For Hitler in THE PRODUCERS- almost everyone was wide eyed and slack jawed with a look incredulity on their faces-it seemed  no one could believe what they were seeing.

Yea BAD BATCH is that awful.

Granted some of it works on an isolated basis, but the vast majority of the film is a hysterical disaster that needs to be shipped off to Nashville for the Rifftrax Boys to riff live or shot into space so the Mystery Science crew and add it to season 12. It’s a film that confounds with it’s actual non-sense.

And it is non-sense since nothing in the film makes sense-on any level-expecially its own. There is no world building, there is no through line, and worst of all there is no internal logic. NOTHING makes any sense even in its own world.

Who put this together? Did they simply not shoot the whole script or was this a nine hour film where they cut seven of them out?

I'm going to tell you as much of the plot as I can that makes sense of:

The bad batch are people who are thrown out of Texas for various crimes. Instead of going to prison they are tossed into a desert wasteland. A woman (Arlen) is tossed into the desert. She wanders off and is captured by a large group of cannibals who tie her up, cut an arm and leg off of her and eat it. She escapes. Collapses from lack of water but is discovered by hermit (Jim Carrey) who brings her to a town called Comfort. Five months later more stuff happens involving the head of the cannibals, his young daughter and cult leader/drug dealer Keanu Reeves.

That's all you need to know... other than the ending is the new definition of WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?

The mind boggles.

I filled pages and pages in my notebook, not of things that happened but of questions about the things that don't make sense- for example:

The film begins with dialog over the titles about the bad batch people being tattooed before being shipped off. There are sounds and talk as if there are tons of people-except only one woman is dumped in the desert. Where is everyone else?

Why does she only have half a bottle of water when she's dumped?

Where does anyone get water anyway?

How does everyone wander the desert for days without water and not be worse for wear?

When Arlen escapes the cannibals no one goes after her- why? Are free meals that plentiful?

The cannibal camp is full of people in the first couple of shots- lots of cannibals and lots of people missing arms and legs...where did they disappear to about the time Arlen escapes? Even when we return to the camp we never see anyone ever again.

Why does the shape of Arlen's stump change in each scene?

When is this set? All the technology is 1980's or 90's-people listen to LPs and cassettes but there is a graffiti listing 2012. All the on screen music is 30 years old.

Where is the electricity coming from? The batteries? the gas?

Who is Keanu Reeves character?

How can Arlen have been in Comfort for five months and not known about the nightly raves?

How could Arlen have been in Comfort for five months and when she returns after going walkabout for two days have no one know who she is?

How does Arlen shoot the black woman when the trigger is never pulled?

The Cannibal guy wants to find his daughter so bad yet he takes time to dally with Arlen?

The Cannibal Guys lives in the desert and goes riding out into it but has no idea where anything is?

How does a snow globe allow the big guy to find Comfort?

What is anyone's motivation?

Where does all the sewage go to and how do they have running water (yea I know that last part is a duplicate but it's a real question)?

Where does all the stuff in Comfort come from?

Keanu says the drugs are the economy of Comfort but he gives them away for free…

Where did they get the rocks to make a fire pit at the end?

Is this film serious or a huge joke?

There are tons more questions (that’s about a third of the ones I wrote down) but why bother?

The reason I was making so many notes is that Arlen is a non-character. We know nothing about her. We never get a sense of what she is thinking. She simply staggers through the landscape moving around  for no discernible reason.  We lock on the flaws in the plotting and elsewhere because there is a black hole in the central role sucking the life out of the film. Its so empty a role that I have to think that the role was written that way because no one can,  not even in a bad performance,be that much of a nonentity unless it's intentional.

Making everything worse are numerous god awful performances beginning with Suki Waterhouse as Arlen, who starts off okay and then goes into the toilet rather quickly. Her performance is so exceedingly bad that the only thing I can think is that she is fine but the editing wrecked it- which I can believe since there are so many editing errors your brain could explode trying to list them.

Equally bad is Keanu Reeves, who gives one of his worst performances in years. While he is hard to spot to start, once he opens his mouth you know its him since he performs his role as if a stoner is doing his role from the Bill and Ted films. The cast of non-names are anywhere from poor to okay.

There are all sorts of technical issues-Sound effects don’t match up to what is happening on screen, things appear and disappear in shots, the visual effects vary in quality, and as I said the editing is atrocious. This is not a bunch of first time filmmakers working with no budget. Seriously while highly polished, this film is more confused than most direct to video trash I see.

Watching the film I wondered not how did this get made-rather its why it was getting released. This is such a mess it potentially could damage the reputation of everyone involved. Seriously the fact that people who should know better are releasing this with a straight face is kind of offensive. Isn’t there a better version of this material? I can’t imagine there isn’t. Didn’t anyone screen this for an impartial audience? If the script was always this disastrous why did it get green lit? More importantly why did anyone sign on – couldn’t they see this was a turkey? (of course the script probably had all the explanation that isn’t on the screen in sections explaining character motivation)

When I wrote this piece originally I did so with lots of snark and brick bats but I took it most of it out. I removed all the jokes because as unintentionally funny the film is, my reaction isn’t. I’m annoyed. I’m annoyed that this is getting a release when dozens of better films aren’t. I’m annoyed that I wasted so much time with this film. Yes, I’ve gotten some laughs seeing it and writing it up but I would rather have gotten some insight and thoughtful discussion.

I can't recommend this to anyone as a straight film. For bad film lovers this is a must- especially if it’s a cinema where liquor is served and you're with a whole bunch of clever friends who talk to the screen-I'm sorry I should not have said that but then again they should not be releasing this film without warning patrons as they enter the theater that this film sucks.

I'm curious if some theater manager will take pity on the audience and give them their money back if they make it to the end (I actually had that happen to me once)

For riffers only all other stay far away.

ROCK AND ROLL THE MOVIE (2016)

Darren Dowler's ROCK AND ROLL THE  MOVIE is largely one of the worst films I've ever seen. The story of a white nebish raised by a black woman who goes to LA to become an agent is unfunny, offensive and just plain bad.

Everyone is acting as if the whole film is an absolute goof which might have worked if the script were at least passable, instead it's just stupid bordering on brain dead- and offensive on so many different levels.

The only thing that is remotely decent in the film are some of the songs, but they are too few to make the film worth even attempting even for lovers of truly bad films. Destined to take the place of waterboarding in CIA installations ROCK AND ROLL THE MOVIE should be set fire to where ever it is discovered.
