The niece of Orin O’Brien – the first woman hired by the NY Philharmonic- makes a portrait of her aunt as she retires. The daughter of actor George O’Brien, Orin never wanted to be in the spotlight and playing the double bas allowed her to be creative, social and out of the spotlight
O’Brien was hired in 1966 as the first woman and was a favorite of Leonard Bernstein. She opened the doors for all the women who followed and taught generations of musicians. She is a wickedly cool woman and I completely understand why her niece wanted to make a film about her, she is so cool.
This film is a blast. It’s good time with a great lady. When it was done I wanted to call her up and hang out with her.
