TAKING BACK THE GROOVE (2023) DOC NYC 2023

This a is a portrait of Richie Weeks whose music helped define the 1980’s. Despite selling a lot of albums he made almost no money (the film says he made less than 10 grand)  because the record company failed to pay him. Hooking up with DJ and label owner Jerome Derradji they worked to get his rights back and money owed to him

This is a great film that needs to be expanded. Covering one tale of record companies screw over artists, the film points out how badly so many music legends were screwed over. While the film as it is is a real kick in the pants I would love to see it expanded into something longer so that the story would get noticed and get real play in theaters and not just at festivals.

As the film stands now it’s a wonderful short film. Not only telling us a story that needs to be told, it also introduces us to Weeks  and Derradji who are two great guys you’ll want to hang out with. What a joy.

This is one of the great finds at DOC NYC and highly recommended.
