Brief thoughts on the We Are One Festival Talks

The recently completed We Are One Global Festival was put together by 21 festivals around the world with the intention of raising money for people and organizations impacted by Covid 19. As part of that they ran a number of prerecorded talks with actors and directors.  I watched a number of them and here are some quick thoughts.

Cinema Cafe With Jackie Chan from Sundance
Over the years I have seen Jackie Chan speak numerous times. I've actually seen him in person three times when he came to NYC for the New York Asian Film Festival. Jackie is the supreme showman and I really don't care what he has to say only that I'm in the room to hear it because it will make me smile. This talk with Jackie is exactly like that. It's Jackie being Jackie which means its a combination of real information mixed in with Jackie telling well honed stories and always playing to the crowd. This was a blast and I actually had it on a couple of times while I was working just because its Jackie.

In Conversation with Guillermo Del Toro From Marrakesh
Another stunning talk with a great filmmaker. Every time I've seen Del Toro speak in person I've wanted to invite him out for coffee afterward to continue talking movies. One of the most approachable of any director I've come across he has pulled back over the years simply because if he didn't he would get swarmed. Here Del Toro talks about everything and anything and he manages to hold our attention with such skill that you never want it to end. What I loved about the talk is that despite seeing and reading numerous interviews with the great man he still manages to reveal some unknown bit about one his films that you never heard before.

Locarno 2019 Pardo d'onore to John Waters
Hands down one of the greatest talks I've ever seen. I may not like Albert Serra as a filmmaker but his talk with John Waters kicked serious ass. Talking about everything Waters ,is just amazing. WHile I've heard his hitchhiking stories before he still managed to make them seem knew. Despite having a love affair with Waters work I loved that I learned a great deal (like his films never really made any money). This was the best filmmaker talks to filmmaker talk I've seen.

On Transmission: Ang Lee in Conversation with Kore-eda Hirokazu from Berlin
Two titans of cinema sit down and talk about film and you just fall into it. While I am a Kore-eda fan I am not really an Ang Lee fan but watching these two men talk about their work and their ideas about cinema and each others films made me want to go back and watch the films again

Rendez-Vous with Alain Delon from Cannes
I have always been a Delon fan but I never had a chance to hear him talk. Watching this hour long talk not only gave me an insight into his films but also his way of doing things. I wish this had been longer.

Rendez-Vous With Zhang Ziyi from Cannes
Almost to hours with one of the great actresses of the screen. It was a wonderful look into her life and work.

TIFF Talks: Viggo Mortensen & David Cronenberg on CRASH
I think it's clear the best way to get David Cronenberg to talk is to have him talk to a friend. I've seen Cronenberg talk in career retrospectives, at press conferences and after a new release and there was something about the way that he shot the breeze with Viggo that made this one of the most enjoyable. There was no pretense in the questioning just genuine curiosity and the result was unrehearsed responses that delighted.

There were other talks of course (Tessa Thompson with Jane Campion, Song Kang-ho with Bong Joon-ho, Olivier Assayas with Claire Denis, Tantoo Cardinal,Alejandro Iñárritu with Marina Abramović, and Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Soderbergh) but I either missed them entirely or only caught a small portion.

I do hope that if we are gifted with another We Are One Festival they will do more talks because what I saw were all wonderful.

Quick thoughts on Tremble All You Want (2018) We Are One Festival

Premiering this afternoon at the We Are One Fest (you can see it here after 315PM)  TREMBLE ALL YOU WANT is a film I saw back in 2018 for Japan Cuts but never reviewed. The problem was I was backed up with three other festivals at the same time and something had to go and this was was the one I pushed overboard. It was not because it was a bad film but purely that it is a solid if unremarkable romantic comedy that I couldn't bring anything to the table to say that would make my review stand out.

The plot of the film has a young woman, ten years out of high school refusing to date or acknowledge anyone romantically because she is still madly in love with her high school crush. He doesn't really know she exists but that doesn't stop her from being in love. Things become complicated when one of her co-workers asks her out.

This is a good little romantic comedy that ticks all the right boxes. This is a film that does what a romantic comedy is supposed to do, which is make you feel warm and fuzzy and then get off. WHich is enough. Honestly it is good enough that I remembered the film to years on and didn't have to look it up to see what it was and I found I could describe the ending in detail (my memory matched my notes).  I did  have to check my notes to see why I didn't actually review it.

It's definitely worth a look - more so if you love romcoms.

Nasir (2020) WE ARE ONE FILM FEST 2020

Time and the flow of history has made this probably the most important film at the We Are One Festival. 

This story of a day in the life, that becomes a soul crushing look at intolerance (this is not a happy film) is exactly the sort of art that reflects what is going on in the world and in America at this very moment. Though set in India this is a story that could be in most places in America.

This review was written for the New Directors New Films Festival that was supposed to happen a couple of months back. With that festival in limbo I had this review banked until We Are One  scheduled it. A couple weeks back I simply changed the notion about which festival and posted it.

That said in view of current events in America had I been viewing the film now I suspect that my take on the film would be slightly different. I know current events would have altered what I wrote from seeing it just as a film on intolerance into something that connected more to history. Saw what you will sometimes when and in what context we see the film affects our thoughts about it. Current events have had me thinking about this film much more than seeing it cold did.

To that end this is the review I wrote for New Directors. I have not altered it because I have not seen the film in three months and there is currently no way I can see it until the film plays at We Are One (the link I had expired 3 months ago and the festival is not making films available in advance becaus it is a free streaming fest). While I probably should have waited to post my thoughts to see how current events alter the viewing of the film, you need to know that this film exists and that it is now required viewing. 

To that end here is my three month old review of NASIR

A day in the life of a Muslim shop keeper in a city that is largely Hindu in India. We watch as he goes through his daily routine, writes poetry for his wife and suffers the quiet indignities of existence and of being a minority.

Stunningly beautiful film is the true definition of an art film. Long beautifully composited images take our breath away and run counter point to some of the ugliness of the world. This is a film where every image is worthy of hanging in a museum. Shot in a Academy ration the narrow aspect forces us to truly focus on what we are seeing and what the people on screen are experiencing. We simply can not look away which makes the final turns all the more devastating.

Whether you like the film or not will be determined by the fact that the film is very deliberately paced. Events play out in seeming real time. This isn’t true since the film only runs 79 minutes but it often feels like things are taking much longer. This is not a knock against the film, rather statement that with in this compact package director Arun Karthick has made a film that feels as expansive as a whole day.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves thoughtful deliberate art films.

Adele Has Not Had Supper Yet (1977) (aka Dinner For Adele) We Are One Fest

As films come and go to the We Are One Global Film Festival I somehow missed this smal, largely forgetten in the US charmr is going to be playing the fest on the final two days, June 6 and 7. 

A key film in drawing me into the film world, despite not seeing it for 30 years after I first saw commercials and clips, ADELE is the sort of film that they really don't do any more. Partly because the form is out of favor, but mostly because what is being sent up or loving kidded is out of favor. I say this because I got an email after this review ran in 2014 to ask who Nick Carter was. (The short version: he is a pulp detective who kind of rivaled Sherlock Holmes in popularity in America and who had hundreds of stories written about him and had a series of stories spun off about his son. There are movies, radio shows and TV programs about him)

This is a great deal of fun and highly recommended - though be warned it goes up at 625PM on June 6th and will be down when the festival ends the next day. (Details here)

Nick Carter goes to Prague to help the police with a missing persons case and promptly runs afoul of an evil botanist with a man eating plant.

I remember thirty years ago when this movie came out in the US seeing reviews on the local TV station that made me want to see this film. The limited release it got prevented me from doing so, as did the complete disappearance from TV and video. Still the idea of that hungry plant had haunted me for three decades while many other "must see" movies came and went. Thanks to stupid luck I stumbled upon a copy of the film and I have to say that I was not disappointed.

This is a jokey send up of the pulp thrillers from the turn of the twentieth century. It takes one of its greatest heroes, Nick Carter and plays with everything that makes the pulps so much fun. Here Carter is called into action and using a variety of wild inventions he takes on a villain that is very much of the "boo hiss" Snidley Whiplash, mustache twirling variety. Its just a fun movie done in the style of stories that haven't been in vogue in a century. No big belly laughs but lots of chuckles and plenty of smiles.

If you want to see a good little film, thats probably all but forgotten now, you'll need to search it out. Its not going to be the be all and end all but its a neat little gem to add to you list of film treasures.

The real life superhero that is Blood Rider (2020) We Are One Fest 2020

Jon Kasbe hits it out of the park again with BLOOD RIDER, a portrait of Joseph, who races blood to where it is needed in Lagos. Nigeria via motorcycle.

Actually the film is about Joseph and Deborah a woman expecting her first child who will need the blood Joseph can provide. I mention this because much of the second half is Deborah having a difficult delivery and Joseph rushing the life saving blood to the hospital. And before you chastise me for giving anything away, I'm not. You can pretty much guess from the set up as to how it is going to go but it doesn't matter because what Kasbe does is to make you want to cheer for this real life superhero.

What makes Kasbe's film so compelling is the craft in the filmmaking. Kasbe is one of the greatest filmmakers working today and he simply knows how to tell a story. More importantly he know how to win friends and influence subjects to the point that Kasbe gives us an incredible sense of intimacy with his characters. We are right there on the motorcycle and in the delivery room. Kasbe somehow  managed to have Deborah and her husband allow him to not only film her at a time of incredible stress but to do so up close and personal. It boggles the mind.

Kasbe's telling of the Joseph's tale is truly heroic. Joseph is a real life superhero saving lives and Kasbe makes damn sure we know it by doing everything short of having him wear a cape. More importantly the line of silliness is never crossed. Joseph is always a man doing extraordinary things. We marvel at what he is doing via perfect marriage of sound and image.(The score maybe one of the best I've heard all year)

As a long time fan of Jon Kasbe I am continually amazed at his ability to take a subject and do unexpected things with it. From sewers to bluegrass bands to ivory poachers, Kasbe makes films that make us think about things that we think we know only to have us realize we don't. To say that Jon Kasbe is one of the best directors working today is an understatement, he is, with no attempt at overstatement or irony, undoubtedly one of the greatest I've ever had the privilege to run across.

How did I miss Anna was playing at We Are One Fest?

I saw this film last year  as part of a PR attempt to get Oscar to notice it. The film absolutely floored me. More importantly the woman at the center, Svetlana Barandich, absolutely blew me away. How the hell is she not being hailed across the globe? She is magnificent and her performance makes this a must see.

Middle aged single mother desperate for change decides to go to a party where single American men will be to try her luck.

Good small slice of life feels like this is part of a much bigger story. I want to see what happens on either side of this film which is big a ave as you can get.

As great as this film is, and it is duper from top to bottom I have to single out star Svetlana Barandich, who gives one of the great performances I've seen in 2019. This is a towering achievement that makes me want to see her go toe to to with Gena Rowlands who is perhaps the only force of nature who could possible not get lost in her presence. How in the hell has this woman not come on my radar before this?

Yea ANNA is a great film and you'll want to see it because it's so good but when it's done you'll be talking about Svetlana Barandich.

A very short piece on Monster God (2019) We Are One Film Festival 2020

I saw MONSTER GOD several months ago. It was originally supposed to play NYC's New Directors New Films which is in many ways the most art house, in the good and bad ways, of any festival that plays New York City each year. The films are very much of a type and with very rare exceptions never really vary travel from the art house to the mainstream. There is nothing wrong with that and every year I find some real gems but it also means that every year that I will see a few films that wash over me and don't make much of an impression beyond the visuals.

MONSTER GOD is a painfully beautiful short film about kids, cows and an ever present power station.

What it means is anyone's guess...

Then again I really don't care because the images in it are so stunning that I want to take every shot and hang it on my wall.

WE ARE ONE FIlm Fest starts today

The huge world wide WE ARE ONE FILM FESTIVAL hits YouTube  today. They are running a ton of films and director talks all dropping at various points between today and June 7th. They are completely free you just have to go to  either the YouTube page or the festival page. My understanding is the videos will be up until the end of the festival once they go live. All they are asking for is a small donation.

I have been told by the festival that they are not giving the ress early access to the films and that we can just tune in like everyone else. That is not a knock, purely a statement of explanation as to why coverage is going to be in real time and not ahad of the curve. (I am perfectly fine with that because I am working on Hot Docs, Brooklyn and Human Rights Watch as this fest hits)

Assembling some of the world’s most talented artists, storytellers and curators around a central effort to provide entertainment and offer relief in the form of supporting organizations responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival will run exclusively on YouTube May 29 - June 7 at YouTube.com/WeAreOne.

We Are One: A Global Film Festival will give audiences an opportunity to experience different cultures through an artistic lens - each official selection was handpicked for inclusion to highlight the singularities of each participating festival, while also providing a voice to filmmakers on a global stage. Many of these titles will have significant debuts at the festival, with programming consisting of over 100 films, including 13 world premieres, 31 online premieres, and five international online premieres.

A truly international festival, the programming will represent over 35 countries and will include 23 narrative and eight documentary features, 57 narrative and 15 documentary short films, 15 archived talks along with four festival exclusives and five VR programming pieces.

Notable film presentations will include Ricky Powell: The Individualist, a documentary about legendary street photographer Powell featuring interviews with Natasha Lyonne and LL Cool J; the online premiere of Eeb Allay Ooo!, a unique satire about professional “monkey repellers” and winner of the Mumbai Film Festival’s Golden Gateway Award; and the world premiere of Iron Hammer, a compelling documentary feature directed by Joan Chen about legendary Chinese Olympic volleyball star Jenny Lang Ping, a true trailblazer who forged connections across the globe. We Are One: A Global Film Festival will host a number of specially-curated talks, both archived from past festivals and brand new discussions, that will offer viewers a chance to revisit important moments in film. Talks will feature Francis Ford Coppola with Steven Soderbergh, Song Kang-ho and Bong Joon-ho, Guillermo del Toro, Jane Campion and Claire Denis. 360 VR selections will feature Emmy-nominated documentary Traveling While Black and Atlas V, a sci-fi narrative starring Bill Skarsgard, as well as additional titles with notable talent including John Legend, Oprah Winfrey and Lupita Nyong’o. There will also be special musical performances, including a 30 minute DJ set by Questlove.

We Are One: A Global Film Festival will run from May 29 - June 7 on YouTube.com/WeAreOne. Programming will be available for free, and will include films, shorts, documentaries, music, comedy, and conversations. A full schedule will be available closer to the festival start date.
