Brief thoughts on The World Before (2026) Toronto 2026 San Sebastián 2026

A young woman reconnects with a young man who was her childhood best friend, when he returns for his grandmother's funeral.

This is a lovely little film. It's a film that doesn't reinvent the wheel but it does what it does perfectly.

I like this film a great deal. What I loved was how it handled the uneasiness of how close friends  come together and find that the dynamic of their relstionship has changed due to time and distance. I love that the idea is used to dig deeply into the characters. It's a move that is perfectly placed since had the characters been older there would have been too many complications.

In many ways this is like a lyric tone poem where the sound and image enhance the performances and the dialog in unexpected ways giving us a deeper  resonance.

While not the heaviest of dramas everything came together and I was moved.

Recommended.

The film plays at San Sebastian on September 24.
