mother, you have not died yet. but you will. and when you do, you will finally be alive again (2026) Camden International Film Festival

Advik Beni's film is a trip in the best sort of way. The film is an exploration of grief through unconventional means.  The film is portrait of a woman named Lishana as she tries to cope with the death of her mother and loses herself in her art. The film moves around in all sorts of directions, seeming at times not to be about what the film claims to be about before snapping in right on target. It’s a spot on representation of how one’s mind works when one is dealing with the loss of a parent.

I went from wondering “what am I seeing? Why are they show me this?” to connected and willing to go anywhere with it. I tell you this because this is not so much a conventional film but a very personal and very real trip into the head space of an individual.  If film is supposed to be a representation of real life, this is film that does exactly that.

You will forgive me if I keep this brief. I saw this film in early August, and I have been wrestling with the review ever since. I have watched the film several times, complete and in pieces in an effort to find the words to express what I feel. The trouble is I don’t have the words, which is something that the film itself gets around by creating a feeling and images that are beyond words.

This film is magical. It is like putting on someone else’s head for 90 minutes.

See this film. See it in a theater where you will not have distractions. See it to get out of your head and connect to life.

Highly recommended.
