While the festival has largely been a catch all fest under Dennis Lim’s leadership, this year the festival has a number of world premieres including GODZILLA MINUS ZERO.
I’m keeping this brief because you know the drill when it comes to the festival and because where normally I’ve seen a lot of films prior to the fest, this year I’m limited. I cannot get out of work to do the press screenings, so I’ve been limited to just the evening screenings and the few I can get as a screener.
Not to worry there will be a good number of reviews coming so keep reading. I should have over 60 films covered plus lots of reports from the public screenings.
A word of warning I've seen most of the Currents short films and they are very much in the experimental/avant garde section of cinema. Be prepared for abstract images and odd sounds. All of the collections are hit or miss with some good trips with some less interesting ones. I will have reviews/ comments as to everything I've seen. (And I need to say that Collection Five Material World includes Elegy for the Forgotten, On an Endless War which is the best film I've seen at NYFF and one of the best films you'll see all year. Additionally Collection Six Out of the Present has Laura Poitras and Rachel Lauren Mueller'S THEY'RE HERE, which is almost certain to be in the Oscar mix.)
(And that ladies and gentlemen is my shortest NYFF curtain raiser in 17 years)

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame's Music Documentary Fest starts this week as well.
It’s a grand collection of music docs, appearances and performances happening out in Stony Brook Long Island
There are some truly great films here (I’ve seen about half the festival) and you need to go if you can.
I do need to warn you that tickets have been selling, and you need to buy tickets sooner than later lest you find out the screenings have sold out.
I highly recommend the fest.
