Smell of Apples (2026) Toronto 2026

Young boy living under apartheid and believing all that he is taught by his high-ranking military father finds his life turned upside down when  a casual comment changes his entire world.

Based on a best-selling book, that was the source of a successful play THE SMELL OF APPLES is a well-made historical drama that hits all the right notes. I could see this film getting a lot of awards at years end.

At the same time the film is very much set in the South Africa of the early 1970’s. It’s a film that feels like it would be infinitely better if I had a better grasp of the time portrayed and the events being referenced. This isn’t to say that the film is bad, rather I think it will play better for then South African audience than for someone like me.

Definitely worth a look, just be aware your milage may vary.
