In the near future, in a perfectly controlled society without emotional connections, or anything living, a man working on a toy dog to help people cope, discovers the seeming last squirrel and makes it his pet. This causes changes within him and he begins to fall in love.
This is a dry dystopian comedy that you have to go with. I say that because the world it largely operates in makes no real world sense. (Without going into it, how we got from our world to that world doesn't fully make sense- its too science fictiony). The film is a a grand allegory about our lives and how we are not really connected to anyone or anything and how when we do connect the world changes.
World construction aside, I'm mixed on the film. Yes it's funny. Yes I really like the people on the screen. My issue is more that it doesn't do anything unexpected. It never surprised me, and I felt things lifted from other films. This doesn't mean its a bad film, it's not/ What it means is that what should have been a great film is just a really good one and I was disappointed as a result.
Definitely worth a look for people who like dry humor or love dystopian tales.
