A young woman from East Germany tries to get by in the West
I didn't connect to this film. A mannered look at a time and society that has drifted away, I found myself on the outside looking in. This is a very mannered film that is very much an art house film of the 1960's. It's a film that just didn't work for me.
And while I am saying this I am also aware that the write up of the film on the NYFF website affected my reaction to the film. Speaking of the film in deep reverence and saying that it was a film that changed German cinema I was a bit confused. I've been watching all sorts of film from Europe over the last six decades and I have no real memory of the film coming up in any sort of conversation. Going in I wanted to see some great work of cinema. I didn't get it. It was a film that reminded me of other films that were being made across Europe at the time.
Because I know the film is good and well made, and because there is a vast gulf between the promises of the NYFF write up and my reaction I'm not going to do a real review.
