Fantastic Fest starts this week and genre lovers across the world are rejoicing since the festival is the launching place for any number of big up and coming films (say RESIDENT EVIL) and TV shows (say CARRIE). The fest is a buffett of great films.
As I do every year I'm staying in New York and reporting on it remotely. Usually that results in a wave of films I can report on early, but this year I'm still waiting for a lot of the films I requested to come in. At the same tim I have seen some solid films you need to see.
GODBYE MONSTER is Luke Barnett's wonderful short film about a boy and the monster under his bed. Lines of dialog live rent free in my head
ATTACK ON PARADISE - awesome action film about a man returning home from prison just as the police decide to take out the gang that lives in apartment block. He has to do what he has to do to keep him mom safe.
BLOOD FEAST -Herschel Goirdon Lewis' film changed the movies forever as ref paint blood was splahed all over the place in living color for the first time. A kind of crappy film that is a blast when seen with a stoked audience-which is the best way to see it
HELL HOUSE- legendary documentary about devout christians making a haunted houise to scare people to Jesus. Its a trip
HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER - fictionalized account of the life and times of alleged serial killer Henry Lee Lucas thats creepy as hell. Made before we realized that Lucas was a grand con man who told the police what they wanted to hear based on what other cons told him to get perks- this is the story of scary guy who did bad things.
EXTREME PREJUDICE- under appreciated Walter Hill film about a cop and drug lord on opposite sides of the law and the border at was.
NO REST FOR THE WICKED - billed as a horror film, I see it more as a love story between two men, one of whom is a vampire.
I did see two films they said I couldn't review but I could mention in the curtain raiser
WHAT HAPPENED TO DORIS is based on the same case that was the source of the Sydney J Furie film THE ENTITY about a spirit that tormented a woman for decades. The film is much more low key than the earlier film and only deals with the early days of the haunting.
I HAVE PROOF is found footage film that is going to work best for hardcore fans of the genre
As this posts I have a bunch of films to watch. Reviews (of the films I'm seeing for the festival) when the embargo drops-after they screen the first time.
