In a future where space travel has replaced the movies, a man who is the care taker of a once bustling studio lives a lonely life. He lives with cat who was once the studio's great star. As he tries to get by, he uses a VR head set and falls in love with a girl who also vists the VR world and wants to travel to space.
This is a once of a kind film that is not like anything you've seen before. Yes it looks like some inde animation from China, but its not really. This film ischarting its own course by mixing animation and live action in unexpected ways. I don't mean that the visuals are fancy only that the mediums are used for dramatic effect.
When you see LIGHT PILLAR, and you should, go with it for a while. I say that because this is not the sort of film where you are in and connected from the first frame. Director Xu Zao is creating a world and and a head space. He wants us to feel what the characters are feeling first before he moves things forward. I didn't click with it the first time out right away. I kept fighting it. And then things clicked and I understood.
This is a film of quiet power and unexpected beauty and emotion.
The film is also very much a trip, where we are at the start and where we end up and how we get thereare not what you expect. As a result, it is very hard to discuss this film since the journey in the film's headspace is important to what you think about the film and its themes.
Do yourself a favor and buy a ticket and take the ride. I think you will be impressed and have something you can wrestle with for a good long while.
