A teenaged girl who has been in cancer remission for ten months goes to a summer camp for cancer survivors.
Bella Ramsey and the rest of the cast make this film something truly wonderful. It's a film that feels real and human and rightly angry. It's a film that touches your heart and your head. It's a feel-good movie that earns its feelies.
I love 95% of this film. Everything except one thing about this film is on my favorite film of the year list.
What I love about the film is that people behave as people. They are angry and foul mouthed and secretly hiding their pain which pops up at odd things. I love that almost all of the characters are not you typical soap opera characters even if they are your typical characters. I believe this because Ramsey and her fellow actors sell it.
And a stand-alone kudos for Niel Patrick Harris who delivers one of the most crushing monologs you'll see all year after Ramsey pushes him too far. It's an Oscar worthy turn that Oscar will never see but will be discovered a year or so from now when everyone wants to know why he wasn't nominated.
This film absolutely rocks, except for one turn which had me screaming at the screen since it wasn't earned and wasn't needed.
Destined to be one of your favorite films of the year SUNNY DANCER is highly recommended
