Life of Jorge Luis Borges(2026) NYFF 2026

Mariano Llinás's epic navel gaze is nominally a look at the life of writer Jorge Luis Borges via objects from his life.

Running an unending 73.... er... 5 and a half hours this is a film that is more about Llinass' attempt to make the movie on Borges. We watch as he and an expert go through Borges' stuff, randomly discuss his works and drive around looking for various locations decades after the fact. He doesn't trim anything so we get to watch him as he drives around with his screaming kids in the car.

I'm not sure if Llinas is serious or joking.

Either way it's pretentious bullshit and one of the biggest wastes of my time on any level this year. Worse it is useless unless you speak Spanish (we see a lot of untranslatred text) and know Borges stories and his life going in- because there is zero effort to explain any of the stories or his life. Llinas assumes you know and can keep up. Then again I kind of know pieces and I was lost. He also assumes you have his sensibility or are going to buy his bullshit.

And it is bullshit, top to bottom.

I hated just about everything related to this film

And did say I hate the conciet of constantly showing text through magnifying glasses?

And did say I abhor the music used? I want to break the handd of anyone who played the xylphone.

This is a film that is everything that is wrong with festivals like the New York Film Festival. Its a film that is a grand con job on programmers who don't know that are being conned. Its full of big words and serious ideas that distract from the fact that the director is a hack and a charlaton.

What a complete waste.
