A Girl Unknown (2026) Toronto 2026

After ayoung girl's father dies and her mother remarries and becomes pregnant with a new child, the girl is shuttled off to another family in the city to be a replacement child.

Moving through time this is the story of a girl, later a young woman as she tries to find a place. Shuttled from place to place she is forced to deal with situations that are not her own making. The film is a scathing look at a woman's place in China. Its a film that does not have a great deal nice to say about men, with most of the men in our heroine's life being rude louts who want nothing to do with her.

I am mixed on this film. This is a great looking film with some great performances. At the same time there is slickness and  formalness to the telling that makes this less a representation than real life. The film has points it wants to make and it does what it has to make them. A near final warm family moment felt hollow because of some of what happened earlier.

While not perfect it has moments and images that make this a film you should try.

Worth a look.
